Ban Pitbull-Type Dogs

If you ban pitbulls, you would have to ban deer, cows and bees as well to be fair. The amount of deaths compared to deer and bees is insignificant. Obviously it is ridiculous to ban deers, cows and bees just like its ridiculous to ban pit bulls.

While deer are responsible for more deaths than any other animal in the United States, the odds of dying from an animal-related incident are still low compared to other leading causes of death:

Deer

Deer are responsible for over 200 deaths per year in the United States due to car accidents. Road authorities have even coined the term ā€œDVCā€ (deer-vehicle collision) to describe these accidents.

Cows

Cows kill about 20 people per year, usually by kicking or trampling.

Dogs

Dogs kill about 30 people per year, with pit bulls responsible for more than half of those deaths.

Bees and other stinging insects

Bees and other stinging insects kill nearly 100 people per year, often due to allergic reactions.

This is not an issue of the breed, its the owners to blame. If you want to make a law to address dog attacks then focus on the real problem, the owners of misbehaved animals. If you truly believe these dogs should be done away with then I say it is out of your own ignorance and fear which commonly causes people to have illogical and or irrational feelings. Treat the problem, not the symptom. I would suspect that many of the people that feel that these breeds shouldn’t be allowed had an incident or know someone who has. For these people I would offer a similar idea. People who were hit by a vehicle should push to ban all vehicles of that type so it can’t ever happen again. Does that sound right?

Mine must be broken. He might cuddle you to death if you don’t keep an eye on him. I do know of a few chihuahuas that will bite your face off if you get too close though.

I do not agree with this proposal. Pitbull type dogs can be sweet, protective and very good family guardian dogs if raised well and trained properly. Just like any other large dog breed, environment, treatment, and training have a major impact on the behavior of the dog.
If you ban this type of dog… what would that mean? A mass confiscation and euthanization of a whole lot of family pets? (Peanut the squirrel but the dog version en-masse anyone?)
Maybe try banning or instituting stricter penalties for some of the root issues like puppy mills or dog fighting or animal abuse instead? Or maybe incentivize (rather than mandate) spaying or neutering for the typically more aggressive breeds?

This is terrible information. I highly suggest you spend some time with these dogs and actually get to know the breed you will find out the truth which is it’s an amazing breed of dogs.

The statistics are so bad for several reasons:

  1. Every mutt gets labeled "pitbull*. Any mixed breed dog that has a white patch on its chest especially gets called a pitbull. I’ve seen articles saying a pitbull attacked people and they showed a picture of the dog and its a long hair German shepherd mix but it had a white patch on its chest

  2. The urban type folks that stereotypically have a lot of these kinds of dogs tend to encourage them to be protection type dogs, which is something they are NOT. Pitbulls are actually the least likely dog to bite a human and I’ll explain why in a second, however they are extremely intelligent and want to please their owners and what they think their owner wants of them more than anything. If they think their owner wants them to protect them and be aggressive towards strangers they will do it.

The actual factual reason real pitbull terriers (not mutts bring called pitbulls) are really the least likely dog breed to bite a human is in their history of being bred for dog fighting.

A lot of people don’t understand what the dog fighting pitbulls were engaged in actually was. It was a test of gameness. This is a test of how willing they are to KEEP wanting to fight. Most people think it’s just a fight to the death or something. It’s not. They would put the dogs together for a few seconds and separate them immediately. They would then bet which dog doesn’t want to keep fighting first. That’s gameness. That could go on for hours.

It’s horrific but the part of this you need to pay attention to is how much those dogs are being handled by a human during that. The fighting dog cannot redirect his bite or aggression to his handler. That wouldn’t make a good fighting dog. Any dogs that showed any signs of human aggression were culled. There is no other breed of dogs that have been bred for a lack of human aggression under such extreme circumstances.

I have experienced this extreme focus and unwillingness to bite a person first hand in my ownership of pitbulls. These are the most affectionate and loyal dogs to humans there are. There has been no other dog breed that’s been bred through such extreme conditions like that. One fault is obviously they may not always like other dogs. That’s how I found out first hand, I’ve had a couple unwanted accidental dog fights before and when you go to split them up you really understand how they just will not bite a person. A real confident example of the breed is unbelievably deliberate, focused, confident and ultra secure of their self that nothing rattles them.

This is also why pitbulls are the #1 dog breed of choice for dog abusers. They will take a lot of punishment from humans and still not bite.

The dogs that do bite humans are either not really a pitbull, have been extremely abused or encouraged to be protective or aggressive etc

The most dangerous type of dog by far is an insecure one. A weak minded dog like so many breeds are very quick to snap and bite a human without any warning. You will never ever see that behavior from a real pitbull that was raised with love they will not bite a person for just about any reason under any circumstance.

I am not in favor of banning pit bull, pit bull type dogs or what you would consider any other breed as aggressive.

What is being discussed in a nutshell is what has been rolled around for decades but it is called Breed Selective Legislation and it is for lack of better terms like beating a dead horse.

It is easy for you to call for a ban and not think of any consequences to your actions. I bring up the conflict that has occurred due to government overreach with Peanut the squirrel and Fred the racoon.

You should know it will be ugly and government overreach at its best. NO dogs in shelters to be adopted but euthanized, pets seized and euthanized without the thoughts of appeal. This ban spans to dogs that are mixed with the breeds in question, and there is no true way to know what breeds most are crossed with. And just because it looks like a pit bull type dog means it is.

Also I would like to ask, can you describe what a pit bull type dog looks like? The pit bulls we see now are in no way comparative to the original line of pit bull who were bred to be people dogs, nanny dogs and any aggression toward any owner or person was considered a flaw and that animal was put down. This breed was bred to people please and whether we want to admit it or not they were bred to fight other dogs and bull bait, not turn on their owners.

Look at the UK with the banning of the bully breed, the government offered money to you if you brought your dog in to be euthanized and some stole dogs to do so.

What we are left with would be golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, chihuahuas and what are considered family friendly dogs. ALL DOGS REGARDLESS OF BREED CAN AND WILL BITE THEY ARE ANIMALS.

We have merely bred the best to make a dog that suits our needs, but it is an animal! But with this also comes problems, the family friendly breeds will be bred to the point of health and behavior problems.

What needs to be done is stricter laws on the owners! Put penalties in place!

Like with anything, the legalities will have the ones who have always followed the law and the ones who will have no regards and do as they please, like owning a gun.

Look at the scope and magnitude of the effects this will have on everyone, not just you or the ones in your circle. There are consequences to every action.

As for the CDC information, take it with a grain of salt, it may say pit bulls but that category breaks down even further. Research the truth, jut not what one government agency has to tell you they have found, this election as well as many in the past should tell you enough that you have to search for the real truth not what they tell you to think.

This is ridiculous!

This is a form of discrimination and can be considered a form of hate speech against a certain breed of dog. There is no such a reason for that.

Something that we should all be aware of is that sitting for long periods of time causes 433,000 deaths per year! For more facts and information on sitting deaths visit the link below to fact check this comment.

Should we ban sitting? To prevent 433,000 deaths per year world wide?

This is ridiculous. As a pitbull owner I strongly disagree. If anything there should be harsher penalties for dog fighters or animal abusers or owners who fail to train or control their dogs.

It’s not the breed- it’s the owner.

There are 18 million pitbulls in the US, and only 1.2 million Rottweilers in the US. Do the math! I don’t think there should be a ban on either dog. I love all dogs, and pitbulls are my favorite breed. They are a sweet, gentle, and loyal breed.

I don’t agree with out right banning the breed but we do need to revamp breeding rules and regulations for this type of dog, and maybe make rules regarding age of the owner requirements. If we slow down the breeding of these dogs and focus on producing the best examples of the breed maybe the agression can be bred out of the breed.

Out of the fatal numbers provided from years 1982 -2014 (and other recent years provided), did those numbers take into account of those breeds of dogs killing to protect their families (home invasion/etc) or inflicting injuries/death due to military/police work?

That then brings a bigger argument… is it the breed or their training?

Nope, some of the sweetest dogs I’ve ever known have ever been pits.
But I would however support banning the people who mistreat their own or any animals and therefore make them aggressive and dangerous :+1:

I respectfully disagree. This is a slippery slope. What about dogs that look like they might be part pitbull? People need to take responsibility for themselves and their actions. I am sick and tired of having more and more of my rights trampled on because someone else can’t handle the responsability that comes with freedom! I am not a dog owner.

Guns do not jump up and shoot people on their own so that is not a good comparison.

This is a horrible ban! Put bulls used to be used as Nannie’s for children. Maybe we should educate people to treat them better. Little dog’s attack people also. Do not ban this precious breed, ban horrific owners.

:-1: proper training of any dog prevents such behavior from pits also owners should be more knowledgeable (maybe licensed or required to go through proper education of the breed and training the breed in home) than the common lap dog owner to own a APBT, Bully bred, American bulldog, ect. The most aggressive dogs I’ve known were chows, but we haven’t banned them. The most protective dogs I’ve seen are cane corso, but we haven’t banned them for attacking even when not provoked. Require a training class for ownership or something. But banning the breed itself is selfish to the animals and hurts the people who do properly train their animals and have the proper knowledge of the breeds and how to train them.

I disagree and i am sure many others will as well. First of all bans dont work. They have banned many drugs and they are still out there. They banned alcohol and it went underground. There are thousands of pit-type dogs that have been loving members of their families for years. I have 2 of them. I am sorry you may have had a bad experience. I will agree owners should be held liable for their dogs actions but that needs to include all breeds. Pitbulls are the most misunderstood breed right now. I can remember years ago it was Rottweilers then Doberman etc. There needs to be more education on them and more prosecution for those who mistreat them.

Not the dogs fault. It’s the owners. If u treat any breed like shit they are gonna turn out aggressive. There’s also trainers out there that deal with and help aggressive dogs

Selling them should be restricted or banned entirely. With that being said, the Pitbulls that are already out there in American homes and shelters should be left alone. Crack down on breeders and anyone selling for profit.
