There needs to be a national ban on forced electric car purchases/phase out of gas cars. NYS is pushing this as implementation in 10 years. With the current state of the car industry and tariffs, this is not feasible. Our electrical grid also can not handle everyone moving to gas cars. This will also force car dealerships to change their selling model. Lastly, the cost is greater for an electric car; many do not have the means to make this switch. If one state bans gas cars, people will start crossing state lines to buy them in another state. Used gas car prices will skyrocket as well. We do not have the infrastructure for all gas cars and this switch should be a choice, not a mandate.
What you are proposing is already (albeit in a different way) working its way through the powers that be in DC.

California has been granted a âwaiverâ from Federal regulations, allowing it to enforce stricter regulations in response to the pollution in the state (theyâve had that exemption since the 1970âs - I remember game shows promoting âCalifornia Emissionsâ as a feature on new cars - but the automakers generally adopted those features and made them standard nationwide). California has already been put on notice that they are likely going to lose that waiver.
-
California adopted an âZero Emissionsâ by 2035 policy, effectively banning the sale of gasoline powered automobiles. This policy was issued under the waiver above. If they lose that waiver, the policy will become unenforceable.
-
Seventeen states (including NY) have âcopycatâ laws that follow Californiaâs environmental policies. If California loses itâs waiver and the policy becomes unenforceable, then those states will not be able to enforce it either.

The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (or âCAFEâ) standards that regulate miles per gallon are likely being rolled back to 2020 levels (the Biden administration had increased them significantly to start in the 2027 model year, making it more difficult for non-electric cars to comply),

A bill is proposed that will likely be introduced in the next couple of weeks that will repeal the renewable fuel standard. This is the law that mandates that ethanol and biodiesel be blended into fuel. For years the mandate has required more ethanol be blended than the EPA allows (10%), commonly referred to as the âblend wallâ. At the same time, almost 50% of our biodiesel supply is imported from Argentina (while weâve been exporting ethanol). The production of ethanol and biodiesel use farmland that otherwise would be producing food, so this also increases our food supply.
Honestly, I do not want a 'national" ban on anything with very few exceptions. Get the Federal Government out of our lives, leave it up to the states the way the country was designed. Why should LA/California, New York/New York, or Chicago/Illinois dictate anything to any other city/state? If you want better laws, elect better representatives, or move, but donât punish anyone else.
NY is awful - agree. Iâve wanted to get out. Our infrastructure canât handle the policies of these terrible politicians. I donât want a ban on the cars, I want a ban on telling us we âhaveâ to buy them. From previous comment, it appears this work is being done thankfully. I didnât know. I just donât know how much worse these liberal states can get.
