Make English the Exclusive Official Language of the United States

Make English the Exclusive Official Language of the United States

I propose that the following 9 policy proposals, about making English the exclusive official language of the United States, get merged:

1

Written by @Solomon_Owens
{Officialize English of The Nation}

2

Written by @JoRo
{English is Official Language of US}

3

Written by @bredane
{Declare English as the national language}

4

Written by @Ben1
{National language of english}

5

Written by @Thinkaboutit
{English only}

6

Written by @MKSJ
{Designate English as the Official National Language}

7

{Make English the official language of the USA}

8

{English official language}

9

{Constitutional Ammendment: English as Exclusive Official Language}

Explanation & Justification

The United States is facing a cultural divide, with conflicting and antagonistic cultures and languages threatening to snuff out American culture and language. These nine submissions all request that English be made the official language of the United States. Proposal #2 has the highest number of votes, while Proposal #9 is the most detailed. Since all proposals share the same core request—to establish English as the official language—a merged proposal would streamline efforts, with Proposal #9 potentially serving as the ‘parent’ proposal due to its detail.

I agree, number 9 encapsulates the other English as the official language posts and it is the one closest to being a fully baked. I am aligned with proceeding with 9.

The one thing I’m wondering though is if aiming for an Amendment right off the bat might be too much of a stretch.

Long term I would see that as a reasonable ultimate goal, but I’m wondering if in the short term it would be better to aim for basic legislation with the expectation that after legislation has caused English to ‘settle in’ as the official language and everyone is expected to speak it anyway to then take the next step to making an amendment out of it.

The one question being if the 1st Amendment might cause trouble with just making it a basic law.

You may be right about the 1st amendment hindering an official language, and it may also be a bit of a stretch to go for a constitutional amendment. At the same time, if there is any time to go for it, these next 4 years is that time. It may not be doable in one move, however I think supporting the idea of an official language is separate from knowing how to make it happen. Here we make proposals and show support, but it’s the hopefully great people who are representing us that are left to explore feasibility.

1st amendment should not hinder English as official language as 1st amendment gives one the right to Free speech. If you go to an Italian deli and speak italian to oder a sandwich no problem or speaking to fellow foreign speakers, no problem BUT all official government communication and laws including ballots are ENGLISH ONLY.

A lot of resources wasted on all and any CITIZEN-ONLY communications being translated and published or released in numerous languages. All while English, the comprehension, in general, is REQUIRED in order to become a U.S. citizen.
