I work in a NY State hospital, a “level 1 trauma center” and we have COUNTLESS “long stay” patients taking up much needed hospital beds simply because we have to find “placement” for them.
Other facilities have to right to accept or deny these people, in addition, many are undocumented, and they have to OPTIION to refuse placement that has been found for them. They are basically using hospitals as a place to live now . This takes nurses, doctors time away from other patients, in addition to taking up beds on inpatient units while the ER is full of sick patients in the hallways on stretchers.
Wondering if there is a way to stop facilities and or patients and family members from being ALLOWED to refuse to leave the hospital when medically there is no reason to be inpatient.
