Help the unemployed with more money

Making companies more accountable when they lay off employees who then need to collect unemployment benefits is crucial. For instance, in California, the maximum weekly unemployment benefit has been capped at $450 for over 15 years. Given the current inflation, with costs for groceries, car payments, and insurance nearly tripling, this amount is insufficient.

Companies should provide a valid reason for layoffs, and the state must enhance support for the unemployed. This includes raising the minimum weekly benefit and automatically enrolling individuals in assistance programs such as food stamps. Additional aid should be available while they search for new jobs and even after securing employment, as recovering from long-term unemployment—spanning six months to a year—cannot be resolved with just one paycheck.
