Forbid TV drug commercials /and require financial disclosures from doctors

Pharma needs to be abolished completely and reconstructed.
Scientists who work on the drugs should be screened like they are working for secret service.
No ingredients imported from China or countries like China who make inferior products.

I think this would go a long way toward ensuring our media is not beholden to pharmaceutical companies for revenue, and therefore able to cover issues more impartially.

I think in order to address this, we also have to address the insurance companies. Many times, the insurance companies have the dictors by the short and curlies by refusing to pay for a given treatment.

I wonder how cozy Big Pharma and Big Insurance are…

Doctors should not be paid a bonus by the Pharmaceutical companies for any prescription of a drug, vaccine, or procedure. This is a incentive that goes against the doctor/patient relationship for the best practice for the health of the patient.

Completely agree! There is no reason Pharma should be able to advertise on tv. There is no informed consent to people looking for a quick fix.

It shouldn’t be legal for drug companies to advertise prescription medications directly to the general public. The EU seems to have a good grasp on this topic, in my opinion.

We got rid of cigarette commercials, women’s personnel products, and other things, but we still have drug commercials. The amount of people who run to their doctors saying they need a drug because I seen this commercial is insane. It’s so dangerous. There is no reason to have them advertised. Maybe if they couldn’t do this, our medications wouldn’t cost us a second mortgage.

I actually came here to say this! This needs to happen!

You took this to the next level.
I want a ban on drug commercials the way they banned cigarettes commercials.
The rest is gravy! Nicely written.

This is an absoult must!

These drug commercials should be banned. They are the longest (at least 2 minutes) commercials on TV and cost a fortune and that is passed on to the consumer in the price of the drug. It’s drug pushing. Patient and doctor should make these decisions. There’s a drug for everything now; promoting a quick fix instead of promoting healthy eating; healthy lifestyle, etc.

I would love to see NO DOCTORS on TV at all! They all need to be retrained into getting to the root of the problem instead of forcing pills on you to cover up what is going on!

I came here to say this. It seems like every other commercial is a new perscription. This is ridiculous and should not be allowed.

I was going to make a post about this, below are my notes, feel free to use or share!

Ban on Pharmaceutical Advertising

Background:

The law that allows pharmaceutical advertising on television in the United States is primarily governed by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA), along with regulations established by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Specifically, the FDA permits direct-to-consumer (DTC) advertising of prescription drugs, a practice that became more prevalent after the FDA’s 1997 guidelines were issued. These guidelines allowed pharmaceutical companies to present both the benefits and risks of medications in their advertisements, provided that they include important safety information.

As a result, DTC advertising has become a significant part of the pharmaceutical industry’s marketing strategy, and it includes various media platforms, including television, print, and online advertisements. The regulations are designed to ensure that consumers receive adequate information about the medications, promoting informed discussions with their healthcare providers.

As of now, only a few countries allow direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising on television. These include:

  1. United States: The U.S. permits DTC advertising for prescription drugs, provided that ads include both the benefits and risks of the medication.
  2. New Zealand: New Zealand also allows DTC advertising of prescription medications, similar to the U.S., but with strict guidelines regarding the information that must be included in the ads.

In most other countries, such as those in the European Union, Canada, and Australia, direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs is either heavily restricted or banned entirely. These countries typically allow only promotional materials directed at healthcare professionals.

Regulations vary widely, reflecting differing cultural attitudes toward pharmaceutical marketing and public health.

Proposal:
Prohibit direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical advertising in the U.S., similar to restrictions in most other countries.

Rationale:
Pharmaceutical advertising often drives unnecessary demand for specific drugs, creating an unhealthy focus on prescription-based treatments. A ban would likely reduce overprescription and alleviate pressure on physicians facing patient demands for marketed drugs.

The US is one of the only (if not THE only) nation where advertising pharmaceutical products is legal. This is an area where the rest of the developed world has the common sense to recognize the dangers and the US needs to follow suit and protect our citizens rather than kowtow to the $$$ of big corporations and lobbyists.

Agreed! Full disclosure with the doctors who use these meds as well

We need to ban free samples too, they literally push things by letting doctors have free samples etc to push the meds.

Agree. Also, since so many doctors are salaried employees of regional provider networks, the disclosure should include ALL provider networks.

This must happen! Pharma should be restricted from donations as well.
