It’s almost like you don’t understand what got us here with the problems we already have.
FYI, our framers wanted strong states and a weak central government and you’re over here on a tangent arguing for the inverse.

This was a comment in response to someone suggesting renters pay property taxes instead of the home owner.
You either own your property or you don’t.
I say try this. A onetime Land Sales tax upon purchase up to 10 acres, place fixed percentages on the acres beyond that through an annual property tax bracket system.
Example: .1 to 10 acres no tax after property is fully paid, 10.1 to 50 acres 1%, 50.1 to 100 acres 2%, 100.1 to 200 acres 3%, 200.1 to 500 acres 5%, 500.1 to 1,000 acres 8%, and so on…
I literally came here just for this one. Happy to see it’s a popular item on the people’s agenda.
This is a state, county, and city issue. I think property tax should be limited to the amount it can go up per year. I also think there should be an age of the citizen like 60-65 where you no longer have to pay property tax. But that is up to the state.
Yes , we should Never Have to Pay for what we have already paid for ! And be in constant jeopardy of loosing what we paid 100 times over by morgage companies.
Even if we don’t end property taxes, we should at least prevent counties from increasing them annually and limit how much they can be increased and how often.
End foreign land purchases
There are no federal property taxes. Are you suggesting that the federal government forbid state/county/city to give property taxes?
On the one hand, sure, I totally get this. Our property taxes are huge and cumbersome. I almost never vote for bills that will increase these.
At the same time, our state and county governments need to collect taxes for the services they provide somehow. They can do this in many different ways: e.g. income tax, sales tax, property tax. Is there a justification that homeowners in an area pay more for services in that area? For things like schools, roads, etc? Yeah, quite possibly. We are the ones who will or have or may have children in those schools. We are the ones who drive on those roads. Some states are known to have no income tax, e.g. Texas. But then they have property tax. I think this is a decision for the states to decide, not the federal government to add regulations to. One great thing about our combined federal and state governance is that we can move to another state if the taxes or politics or whatever becomes unbearable. I know, not possible for many, but far easier than immigrating to another country.
I do think that taxes and tax increases must be voted in by the constituency.
Also, while I live in Colorado, I grew up in California and am staying with my parents for a couple of weeks to help out. Their property value has gone up to several million dollars for a tiny little house they bought so many decades ago.
You may think, “Oh, poor you” for that effortless gain in net worth. But, from their perspective, they still have the resources for a smaller valued home.
They just got their next year’s property tax amount and I asked them what it was. It was shocking, to me, how low it was compared to their property value, especially considering California has the highest combined taxes anywhere. Our property in Colorado is valued less but we pay much more in property taxes. The reason, I was told my by step-dad, is because Proposition 13 voted in so long ago has capped the increase in property taxes. When I was a kid I remembered my parents talking about Proposition 13, that it would help pay higher salaries to teachers… that’s all I remember. I remember it was a Democratic proposition to raise taxes. But, as I’ve just learned, it does limit the increase in property taxes to 2% per year, or the rate of inflation, whichever is lower. So maybe something like that will help older, retired people who find themselves in this position… as compared to those newly buying an expensive home who take property taxes into consideration at the time of their purchase.
Local governments still have sales tax, state income tax, gas tax, annual car tax based on the value of your car (this should go away too), fees for permits, parking meters, citations, all sorts of taxes and fees for services. They need to stop charging people taxes for their primary home. Maybe the local and state government will be less wasteful if they had a little less money. Maybe people can contribute in other ways more directly. Gas taxes for roads, parents can contribute to the public schools…I would happily contribute to the things I use but as it stands now, we have an unbelievable amount of property tax and we don’t even have a sidewalk or a working street light. We pretty much get nothing for all that money we pay.
Excellent point.
This! And only one tax to boot! If I get an income tax, there should be no sales tax, property tax, death tax, etc. One flat-rate tax, never to go up, only down. Truthfully, we shouldn’t be taxed at all. Tariffs only!
A Renter’s Tax seems like a bad idea. Renters are paying to live in a place without the equity of a home. Part of the rent is money for the landlord to pay property taxes and upkeep to the property. Renters don’t get the property after so many years of paying unless the renter has a rent to own agreement.
love this idea. I shouldn’t have to pay continuing yearly taxes on something I already purchased
That’s true, but our homes should never be in danger of being taken. Property taxes are a scam. Home ownership should be just that, ownership. Not a lease from the government.
END Capital gains taxes and unrealized gains which is taxes that you pay on money you do not have! What will they think of Next this is outrageous END ALL Federal Tax! Do away with the IRS
Property taxes are awful in my area. Paying a rich amount of hard earned money for a poor public education system that is failing children is awful.
Then there is the fact that I and tons of my neighbors dont even have children in the public school system. Every year the taxes shoot up and it ALWAYS seems like a theft that keeps growing.
I think millions of Americans have been forced onto this very same sinking ship all over the United States. I also think we all deserve a refund of those unjust taxes.
Yes! We are taxed on what we make, and then that money is taxed when we buy a house, then we are taxed on that house year after year. If we sell that house, we are taxed on that too, and then those who buy the house are taxed! Isn’t excessive taxation why we left Britain and started the colonies in the first place??? I can’t imagine how many times a single $1 has been taxed in America. If the government can afford to throw out billions and billions to other countries while Americans struggle to make ends meet, it is clear that we are being taxed too much. Our nations deficit isn’t due to low taxation it’s due to reckless government spending! If they were held accountable and unable to ring us dry they’d be forced to learn how to budget. How can we make this happen?
Land of the free but we are renting our homes from the government ??? Make home owners, home OWNERS Again.
