Reading, writing and arithmetic are foundational skills for comprehending and thinking about the world. However, these skills are taken to an impractical extreme at times. For example, understanding trigonometry will not be important for the vast majority of jobs and workers and therefore should not be required.
An equally rigorous endeavor is argumentative logic and Boolean algebra. This topic, however, lends its self to daily use in the public discussion forum. I lean on my understanding of argumentative logic every day and find it foundational to having productive discussions.
It has been a joke for many years that “I’ll never use algebra again in my life, why am I doing this”? Let’s genuinely fix that.
PS: I understand that many educational requirements are sourced at the State level, but I still feel like this is a valuable potential policy. I also see this as incredibly unrefined. I look forward to refining it with you all.
