Ban Pitbull-Type Dogs

Spot on!

We have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and an American Staffordshire Terrier (a bit smaller than the American Pitbull Terrier) and they do get a bad wrap.

Our ‘staffy’ was just a pup when we got her from a reputable breeder through the AKC. Other than her breeder, we are her first home. She is probably the smartest dog we’ve owned and she gets along with anyone and everyone - especially our 5 year old granddaughter!

Our ‘amstaff’ was a rescue and has a completely different story. We are his 7th home due to his past neglect and abuse. I wish we had gotten him as a pup because he would be a completely different dog!

As a dog trainer I don’t believe in banning any breed dogs is the solution. If you ban pits it could be shepherds then Dobermans then any medium/large dog breeds etc. However I do think people should have a license to own certain breeds you’d have to take something like a 3-6 week course and get knowledge about the breed you are about to take in it would educate the misguided/ unknowing. I would also take it one step further if you’re going to buy one of the breeds you mentioned for example. Then a 9 week mandatory training course with your dog after you receive your license. If you’re not willing to jump through those hoops for the dogs listed you don’t need that dog period. IMO

Dont blame the dog. Its not born aggressive and mean.

Its the owner. I refuse this. We have bigger freaking problems.

Horrendous story, however, some clarification is in order:

The owner/babysitter was NOT home. She left the one year old (whom she was responsible for) with her 13 year old daughter.

Less government control does not include wanting them to dictate our pets. This is an uneducated post and should be removed.

There are only bad owners, not bad dogs. -signed someone who has 2 pitbull babies, they are angels.

That is a myth, and even several pro-Pitbull organizations have come out against it.

“Nanny/nursemaid dog” was not seen in the literature, history, or media, until 1972 when a Staffy breeder named Lilian Rant wrote a piece in the NYT. She was having trouble selling her Pitbull-type dogs because of their accurate reputation for unprovoked and tenacious violence.

I used to believe that propaganda too, until someone told me about “Bear the Pitbull” in Lockport, NY 2007. Google it. It’s the only known case of something like that happening. They are not domesticated dogs. They’re opportunistic predators.

As a professional dog trainer over 20 years and a pit-bull type dog owner, I stand with pit bull type dogs and could argue with my experience, that is not the way to go about it.
It is human fault with lack of education and experience with their dogs and for most behavior issues. Perhaps, we could introduce proper professional trainers to set up free or low charge online or in person training for those types of dogs and dog owners. The only issue I see is the wide variety of training styles available that do work for some dogs and some don’t and there is no set certification for training or becoming a dog trainer on a national level.
Education is what we should focus on with humans, not immediately blaming the dogs.
(side note, I do not disagree with the facts presented but I believe there is a lack of education with dog ownership!)

There are lots of Pitbull dogs that cause no problems at all. I think this is less about a particular breed and more about the people who seek out that breed, though I admittedly have nothing to support this assumption. The courts can already hold people individually responsible for the actions of their dog, regardless of breed.

I have had pitties my entire life and I have had ZERO incidents. They were and are a perfect addition to our family.

I get the sentiment, but Article 1 Section 8 of the US Constitution gives zero power over this issue to the federal government. The 10th Amendment explicitly gives such powers to the states and the people. You should pursue this in the various states.

Two-thirds of pitbull attacks are against their own families/owners. They are bred to be hyperaggressive dogs that attack without warning. This fact is indisputable as they were literally bred for dog fighting and bull baiting. One-third of pitbull attacks are against children and babies. I promise you will not find a single instance of a different dog breed eating literal babies, only pitbulls seem to have this problem. They make up 6% of the dog population but account for over 70% of attacks and fatalities.

This is funny because Caesar’s pitbull literally killed another dog at his training facility. This has nothing to do with training or owners and everything to do with the fact that these dogs were bred for dog fighting and bull baiting, which requires hyper aggression and attacking without warning. Can you point to any other dog breeds that routinely eat children and babies?

Is that why they are the only dogs that eat literal babies? 3 pitbulls ate their way through a door to kill a baby just a few days ago.

On the contrary i believe it is. We grew up with pit bulls, dobermans, german shepards. All three pitbulls we had were well trained and had aggressive tendencies and all three attacked children or other dogs. This breed was made for fighting.

The dog is breed under owners controll, usually for strength. They are very protective animals, and are trained to guard usually. Id like to see a low-cost dog camp, for them to be taken to. The strong will fight. Responsibility of the owner. Fault of the defendant. Judgment by jury if guilty, prior to being placed in detention. Let’s reconsider owning animals in the first place.

Just require a permit for ownership, or especially breeding, in places this is a problem. This allows for responsible dog owners to keep whatever they want and rule out the idiot dog owners. All dog breeds have certain requirements. I think it’s cruel to own huskeys in Florida. They live in a constant state of heat stroke.

Absolutely not. This is media sensation nonsense. Been involved in the raising, care, and adoption of pit bulls, and have personally owned multiple. Hands down the best dogs I’ve ever had. Treat them like a living being, and they’ll treat you like a deity. I’d say ban bad owners before banning dogs based on nonsensical fear. Ignorance is not a reason to ban something.
