Strongly disagree with this.
Banning the dogs will not resolve the issue, it is kind of like gun control, people will always find a way to own the breeds they want.
Instead, the owner should be held responsible and liable for the actions of their dogs.
Iâm going to disagre. Regardless of the data, it is not the job of the federal government to restrict liberties; one should be free to own anything regardless of its potential for violence. This applies to firearms, dog breeds, anything. It is the responsibility of the owner to behave in a responsible manner.
âŚSo only 307 deaths in 42 years? That is very low. Especially if you had available the total number of Pitbull Type Dogs in America in the last 42 years. The ratio of deaths to total number of dogs is, undoubtedly, ridiculously low.
I agree with your response - responsibility lies on the owner and environment the dog was raised. Just like humans. I am a proud owner of a kind, loving German Shepherd and she was even a rescue with a rough past.
If you were to look at data on how many dogs of these breeds are domestic pets today, you will see that this is truly rare in comparison to how many dogs live in households today who have done nothing wrong.
I feel for families who have lost a loved one to a dog aggression incident, but you absolutely cannot blame it on the breed alone.
You want to Ban an entire breed? Blame the masses for the sins of a few? Sound pretty heartless. This is a poorly thought out policy recommendation. Thatâs like saying well Covid came from China which killed millions of people, so We should ban Chinese people. Thatâs stupid.
Pitbull owners should have to file a claim with homeowners for liability if a person is harmed on their property by their pitbull. All pitbull owners should have to have fenced yards to keep their animals secure from the public. If pitbull attacks and harms without provocation then it has to be put down. Even though we may personally not trust the breed it is not constitutional to ban a breed of dog. There just has to be better accountablity for the owner of the breed.
This is by far the most smooth brained suggestion Iâve seen on this platform so far. Youâre advocating for freedom but want to ban a breed of dog. Iâd suggest electric shock therapy
I blame the owners. It takes a bad owner to create a bad dog. Pets are inherently loving and caring. Why blame an domesticated animal? I would also add that there are, on average, 20-22 deaths every year caused by cows. Look it up. Do we now ban cows too? There are FAR more deaths caused by drunk drivers, yet alcohol is still readily available.
Dogs are a product of their breed and their genes which they were bred to have. Retrievers behave the way they do because of their genes, the same is true for Beagles, and the same is true for bully-type dog breeds, which were explicitly bred to be hyper aggressive and, notably, attack without warning. About two-thirds of attacks by pitbulls are against their own family/owners, and one-third of all attacks are against children. I promise you will not find a single case of another dog breed eating literal babies.
We should hold the OWNER not the ANIMAL accountable
Itâs all on how you raise your dogs. Doberman owner here. Our dogs are the sweetest things and HAVE NEVER EVER growled at, lounged at, or bit a human!!! I have people at my house frequently, in fact I just had our basement waterproofed and a team of 10 workers were here for 4 days. My 2 Dobieâs went out and kissed and licked each worker (after given permission every worker was ok with us letting the dogs out while they worked).
I, on the other hand, was bit by an ankle biter mutt when I went to a friends to drop off something she bought from me.
Just because a dog is big does mean its agressive. Raise them right, like kids, and dobermans are the most loving dogs one can own.
What is it about âirresponsible ownershipâ that forces pitbulls to eat children and babies, much of the time from their own family/owners, while no other dog has this issue. Go read the story from about 2 years ago where a mother of two (one toddler and one baby) had her arms shredded and destroyed because she tried to stop their two living pitbulls which they had had for something like 8 years from mauling her children. She was not able to stop them and they killed both the toddler and baby. Just yesterday three pitbulls ate their way through a literal door to kill a baby that their owner was babysitting.
Instead of banking certain breeds, priority should be adequately screening those adopting pets and mandatory education of owners and licensing of all dogs. As a veterinarian I see many aggressive dogs, usually this is a result of their environment, inadequate training, and education. Additionally, municipalities need to hold pet owners accountable for any violation- ie : at large dogs and attacking other dogs, as most are repeat offenders. Having a program to monitor offending dogs and their owners (in addition fines which would fund such a program) would decrease the incidence of adverse events.
Itâs great we can participate in such a way where ideas are shared and honed. My pit-bull is the friendliest dog at the dog park. I donât believe in banning anything other than whatâs truly harming or exploiting others and the environment.
Like all of us there is a predisposition to certain qualities based on our nature and nurture. Training and experience is crucial to any well adjusted person / dog. I do think there is valid reason to consider how to thoughtfully address the issue though⌠Iâm possibly in support of required classes and one time certification for all breeds. Give a tax credit to incentivize participation and costs of the program.?
Ban stupid neglectful owners, and the scumbags that fight dogs
I donât agree at all. I know many many many big smiling loveable pitties everywhere and itâs because theyâve been raised and socialized by their wonderful responsible owners.
Itâs not their fault.
This is stupid. I could post countless videos of Chihuahuas attacking ankles. ATTACKING PEOPLE! OMG! BAN THEM! Get out of here w/this nonsense.
Exactly, this is the fault of the owner and a misunderstanding of animals in general.
Been around animals, livestock, technology and entertainment for quite a while.
Bad misbehaving animals (similar to children), can be further investigated by looking at their environment.
