Term limits for Senators and Representatives

And with no benefits after service. No lobbying for 20 years after service

all SOUNDS good. now they will have LAME DUCK sessions during which they are accountable to NO ONE. just will take the “lobbyists inducements” in a shorter period of time. Most of the people can be fooled most of the time. why dont they remove the lobbying FIRST? as it is written means we have learned NOTHING.

does anyone on **here know the chaos of a lame duck session? ** Have you ever experienced a lame duck congressman? no matter the number of “terms, the LAST term, they are completely unaccountable—-they can take the biggest bribes, they can choose to get together (lame ducks in bunches) and pass any outlandish “Act” they wish. PLEASE dont fall for “term limits”. BEFORE all the money incentives are removed. why do you think they are rushing on this?

Have to make sure that bill addresses what you suggest. But probably won’t.

Disagree. Voters choose their Reps/Senators. A good candidate that people like ought to be allowed to stay in office as long as the people are happy to vote for them. It’s important that our government isn’t erratic—constantly changing. We already have term limits: they end with the next round of elections.

Thank god. There is some sanity on here. Thanks for your savvy comment.

They are popular because NO ONE knows what a lame duck is OR what it means. Once you know—- you would support repeal of the 17th amendment.

Yes!!! WE are term limits!!! So all you can to see that that term limits bill DOES NOT get out of committee. Please.

We want a citizen legislature, who have to go back and live under the laws they passed. I disagree with allowing them to go from senate to house and vice versa. the 6 year limits are fine. After 6 years, go back home, live under the laws you passed. I would be okay with an age limit of 75 or 80. We have millions of smart intelligent people who can take a role in legislating our country. To limit it to the current 600 or so is terrible. Additionally, no separate retirement plans, or healthcare for congress. Congress should have the same benefits as everyone else. No stock trading allowed for members of congress while they are in office.

Term limits AND make it illegal to give money to a politician.
How about making it completely ILLEGAL to give money to a politician. If this happens the lobbyist AND the politician go to jail. Take the money out of Politics. Publicly financed elections. 1) require a token payment from any candidate that wishes to run for an office. this eliminates non-serious candidates. 2) each candidate gets X minutes of campaign ad airtime, X pages of literature delivered to the address of all potential constituents. The amounts are dependent on the office for which they are running. Every candidate gets the same amount of airtime, the same amount of delivered printed material. Level playing field. No lobbyists paying politicians.

Yes on this, a thousand yeses on this!

And maybe some consideration for how career politicians would circumvent this policy- I know many times they simply move into a lateral/adjacent office with help from their friends and end up influencing from a close position. Would love to hear creative solutions to that issue.

Term limits and when their service is done and they are not elected they need to go back to work and not live off the taxpayers anymore.

Absolutely agree!

Senators should serve no longer than 8 years and congress the same. They get rich in less time than that. How can a bartender go from can’t pay her rent to being worth $28M is three years

I do NOT agree with term limits!!! Too many lame ducks ALL AT THE SAME TIME! It is absurd. I love Trump but he got bad advice on this. The Koch brothers have been trying to push term limits for YEARS along with Soros.

@Hopinow you’re saying Term Limits would cause too many vacancies at the same time?

Ok. You just answered why there should be no term limits! Term limits MEANS every rep. Gets a lame duck session! For Senator that would be a SIX YEAR LAME DUCK session—many occurring at the same time! If they can get rich in three years, how rich can they get in six? Without ANY accountability to constituents?
That is why I say ways of making money on the side should be OUTLAWED “before” any consideration of term limits even be taken up!

They become lobbyists! Outlaw lobbying and that is your answer.

Yes. Too many COMPLETELY unaccountable
Reps. AT THE SAME TIME. That is what term limits produces.
