Single Issue Bills for Congress

I agree. Having a short, concise bill would also prevent loose interpretation and corruption.

Great call. Common sense

Agreed. That is the requirement in AZ legislature. They frequently violate it, but then get the bill tossed later in the process. This helps keep discussions and public attention focused on critical items, allowing the public to comment on the single issue. Congress will not want this because then they won’t be able to “hide” things they don’t want other members or the public to know about.

The single page idea is excellent. ADM Rickover said if you can’t put your idea down on one piece of paper you do not know what you are talking about. This is very true.

Didn’t that get attempted a few years back and it crippled congress because no one could negotiate deals for their state in return for approving the overall bill?

Laws for any sexual offense; molestation, rape, incest, and human trafficking have statues of limitation which needs to be removed. The atrocity, trauma and life effects are immeasurable and only the victim knows when it’s time to talk or go forward with charges if able to.
Remove expiration date.

This is a MUST!! Bills would be passed and read so much faster!

AGREED this is how it should have been

Big fan of the expiration date date but I think a single page might force a lack a specification but I definitely agree that 200 pages is outrageous

Couldn’t agree more!

I was just listing to. chip Roy presenting a bill H.R.5342 Equal Treatment of Public Servants Act of 2023, now what I am getting out this social security payments, are not in account, so I am taken that as the moneys we paid in is not there like they should be, it sounds like someone wants to play, robb Peter to pay Paul game, first off that’s going to put further in debt, now H.R. 82 Social Security Fairness Act of 2023, this bill repeals provision that reduce social security benefits for individuals who receive other benefits such as pension from state or local government, from what it sounds like Chip was saying as he gave his talk, was if something is not done the social security with be bankrupt.
That’s the problem, I am not sure what the solution to correct this problem, would be, other then take the social security money that people with pensions, as stated above and put that in as social security money, I am not sure what that will do to the people who have these pensions. This is a real mess and there needs to be a better way to get it back on track. Any suggestions for others on this don’t for get to vote for these bills

Absolutely, have long said this is a major problem.
Thanks for being open with the people and for doing this!

This is terrific. Funny, when I first heard of this site, I joined because I wanted to post my idea for “micro bills”, something I have been talking about with friends and family for a while now. I hope this gets traction! I would like to add to your list a couple of the aspects that I suggested:

– All bills should be posted on the White House site and especially on X, for review and discussion, which would promote dialogue between everyday Americans and Congress.

– I put a dollar limit, $100 million, so if it is more expensive, it must be broken out into components. And to add to this (which I did not in my post), any large-scale spending must be backed up with receipts and regular updates of progress.

– My idea was limiting the bills to 20 pages, although I like your idea of one page better. I just was considering that some of the bills, while being for one item only, might require some more room .

– This also avoids the problem with the line-item veto of a larger bill, which is that Congress could get too bogged down in adding items and too many backdoor dealing will be done to get people to agree to them in advance - and kill otherwise good bills if agreements cannot be made.

This is great - let’s get it to President Trump!!

#6 Well written and please add we need full review of every single Federal Law on the books now for removals of unconstitutional and outdated laws not applicable.
#12 The bills ARE already publicly viewable online along with their stages. Maybe change to must be easily readable by general public in easy format and language and mandatory for x period of time so they stop slipping in bills on a Friday to do secret voting over the weekends…

I’d like to see this in State Constitutional Proposals as well. This will help avoid the confusion and potential devastating effects of passed proposals that the people don’t actually support.
I also think this should be a requirement for all policies and amendments at the state, county, and city levels.
I can’t tell you how frustrating it was to try and read this voting cycle’s proposals for our city. Not one of my friends or family could untangle their true meanings and the conservatives in our city were unable to find any conservative authority’s opinions on said proposals. We ended up voting no on almost all of them because we did not trust our local, liberal government in their synopsi for said proposals.

All bills should require following:

  1. Single-page abstract
  2. Table of key points including total cost, funding sources, effective date, and sunset
  3. Summary of the position in support
  4. Summary of the position in opposition
  5. List of all authors
  6. List of all sponsors

We do this for state and municipal ballot measures. The same should be done for all federal legislation.

And to go along with this - line item veto!!

Excellent first draft of what we need. Thanks for taking your time to organize this!

  1. Universal Application of Laws. I don’t see a reason for this requirement

NOPE keep it 1 page
